Jakarta. The Transportation Ministry is planning to overhaul the education curriculum in 33 vocational schools under its supervision, following the death of a 19-year-old student, Putu Satria Ananta Rustika, at Jakarta Maritime University (STIP Jakarta).

Wihana Kirana Jaya, Special Staff to the Minister of Transportation, who accompanied Minister Budi Karya Sumadi during a visit to the bereaved family's home in Klungkung Regency, Bali, on Thursday, said that the new curriculum would focus on engaging students in humanitarian activities.

"We recognize that the needs of millennials and Generation Z differ from past educational approaches. The younger generation is more inclined towards helping each other. These values will be integrated into the curriculum, emphasizing soft skills such as problem-solving, communication, and digital literacy," she said.

Wihana emphasized that the vocational education reform was prompted by Minister Budi Karya's directive, acknowledging that competition in the job market now requires more than just physical attributes but also competencies and knowledge.

The Ministry will review the vision and mission of each vocational school, including STIP, to improve programs and eliminate violence.

The overhaul in MoT's vocational schools will start with changes in student recruitment systems, followed by teaching methods, including using contemporary language styles to engage students.

"Lecturers, administrators, and students will be involved in productive and more humane activities, all integrated into the curriculum," Wihana added.

The Ministry hopes that its vocational schools will produce competent young individuals, thus preventing incidents like the one involving Putu Satria.
