Street Beggar Left Rp 200 Million in Cash after She Died
Kediri. The passing of an elderly woman who relied on begging for survival has left her neighbors in the East Java town of Kediri stunned, as they discovered over Rp 200 million ($12,725) in cash while cleaning her house after her recent demise.
Roisah, 70, passed away last week after relocating to the neighboring town of Blitar to live with her grandchildren due to declining health conditions.
Following her death, her relatives asked neighbors in the Ngadiluwih District, Kediri, to assist in cleaning her vacant house, village official Manon Kusiroto said on Thursday.
Upon entering the house, neighbors stumbled upon a bag filled with banknotes and at least 50 biscuit cans brimming with coins. It took several days for them to meticulously count the money, under the supervision of the neighborhood leader, and the total exceeded Rp 200 million.
This substantial sum could purchase a brand-new car or even a home in rural areas.
"We have been counting the loose change since her funeral," Manon said.
Subsequently, contact was made with the deceased's next of kin residing in Blitar, who consented to the entirety of the funds being allocated to charitable causes.
"Her grandson, named Ibad, informed us that the entire sum will be donated in honor of his grandmother," Manon said.
Village officials are in the process of preparing a formal receipt once the entire sum has been tallied. They will accompany the deceased's relatives to oversee the distribution of the donation, ensuring it reaches the intended beneficiaries, he added.
