Storm Topples Joglo-Style Building at Central Java Quran School, Injuring 14
Karanganyar, Central Java. Fourteen students from a local Islamic boarding school were injured on Saturday night after a wooden semi-permanent building used for Quranic study collapsed during a storm in Wonosari Village, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java.
The incident occurred as students of the Fathul Ilmi Quran Education Center were reciting the Quran while waiting for the evening (Isha) prayer amid heavy rain and strong winds, local officials said.
The building, designed in the traditional Javanese joglo style, featured tall wooden pillars and a wide open layout typical of community halls. A joglo is typically made primarily of teak wood and clay roof tiles, joined without nails in keeping with traditional craftsmanship.
Five students sustained head injuries and were taken to Dr Oen Solo Baru Hospital, while the other nine received treatment at a local clinic, according to Wonosari Village Head Didik Sutarto.
“The children were getting ready for the evening prayer when the joglo suddenly collapsed,” Didik said.
Gondangrejo Subdistrict Chief Sriyono Budhi Santoso said the joglo stood on waqf (donated) land and was generally sturdy but could not withstand the force of the wind.
“The structure was fairly solid, but the strong gusts brought it down,” Sriyono said.
Authorities reported that the storm also damaged the roofs of several nearby homes. A cleanup operation involving residents was scheduled for Sunday morning.
The collapse comes just weeks after a tragic incident in Sidoarjo, East Java, where a building at Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School collapsed during a concrete-pouring process, killing 67 students who were praying on the ground floor.
