Aceh Jaya. The search and rescue team in Aceh has recovered at least nine bodies believed to be Rohingya refugees from the sea since Sunday.

Earlier on Wednesday, a boat carrying dozens of Rohingya refugees capsized off Aceh. A day later, the SAR team rescued 69 refugees stranded on the hull of their capsized boat, but scores more refugees were unaccounted for.

On Monday alone, six female bodies were retrieved from the waters following reports from local fishermen who spotted dead bodies floating on the sea surface near the Indra Jaya district, said Aceh SAR Team head Al Hussain.

Indonesia is not a signatory to the United Nations’ 1951 Refugee Convention and thus is not obligated to accept refugees. However, the local government and communities often provide shelters for Rohingya refugees for humanitarian reasons.
