RSCM Hospital Assigns 16 Medical Specialists to Treat 300-Kg Man
Jakarta. The Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital or RSCM in Jakarta has assigned a team of 16 medical specialists to treat Muhammad Fajri, a 27-year-old Indonesian man who weighs over 300 kilograms.
According to the hospital's acting president director Lies Dina Liastuti, the team of specialists will check on Fajri's vital organs. Lies said that Fajri's obesity had triggered complications as his weight has disrupted the body’s metabolism.
"This is something very unusual for someone to become this big. This would put huge pressure on the body's metabolism. The lungs and heart would struggle to function ... especially since he does not move around much. The damp air of his home or surroundings can also trigger lung problems," Lies told a press conference on Wednesday.
Fajri also suffers from skin infections from being immobile.
“There are infected wounds on his skin. It is hard for him to breathe because of the infection and all. We are currently examining his condition,” Lies said.
RCSM has treated other obese patients before, including Arya Permana: a boy from Karawang who weighed around 192 kilograms.
“Fajri’s conditions are worse because he came with breathing difficulties and more complications. Arya was lighter, so his treatment did not require as much equipment,” Lies said.
The Tangerang General Hospital had to transfer Fajri to RSCM as the former lacked adequate equipment.
Fajri is now receiving treatment in a specially modified room. Lies admitted that the hospital struggled to insert tools such as syringe needles onto Fajri’s skin as it had to break through extremely thick muscles. RSCM also had to purchase new equipment to treat Fajri, according to Lies.
