Jakarta. Members of the Indonesian Judges Solidarity (SHI) organization have appealed to the House of Representatives (DPR) for a salary increase, citing their current monthly pay of Rp 12 million ($765) as insufficient to support their families.

Thousands of judges began a strike on Monday in response to rising inflation and living costs, as their salaries have remained stagnant for over 12 years.

During a hearing at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, SHI Coordinator Rangga expressed these concerns. He explained that newly appointed judges earn a basic salary of Rp 3.5 million, supplemented by Rp 8.5 million in allowances, for a total of Rp 12 million per month.

Rangga emphasized that this income is inadequate given the responsibilities judges hold. He noted that many judges struggle to cover essential expenses such as school fees, daily living costs, and car loans, which are necessary for safety reasons. He also highlighted the difficulties judges face in affording homes, preventing them from achieving financial security.

President-elect Prabowo Subianto has vowed to address the long-standing issue of judges’ stagnant salaries, promising improvements in their pay and benefits amid a nationwide strike.

He made these remarks during a phone call with Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, as the DPR met with SHI at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday.

Prabowo stressed that ensuring judges are immune to bribery is key to combating corruption in Indonesia. He believes improving their living standards is crucial for maintaining their integrity and honor.
