Prabowo Flies to the Philippines for ASEAN Summit
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has jetted off for another overseas trip on Thursday, this time, bound for the Philippines to meet other Southeast Asian leaders.
The Philippine island of Cebu is hosting the 48th ASEAN Summit as the 11-member grouping tries to navigate the way out of the Iran war-induced energy crisis.
“Mr. President is expected to discuss how ASEAN nations can strengthen cooperation, including in responding to the evolving global dynamics,” the presidential press bureau said.
“... such as on how [the group] can maintain energy security and strengthen coordination in response to the geopolitical dynamics.”
Prabowo is expected to immediately join the leaders of the BIMP-EAGA nations once he lands. This small group aims to spur growth in the less developed areas in Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, hence the acronym.
Brunei’s ruler, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, had already set foot in the Philippines on Wednesday evening. Malaysia has already confirmed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s attendance.
Prabowo’s chief economic minister Airlangga Hartarto had told reporters that ASEAN would possibly discuss setting up “strategic petroleum reserves” to plug the energy gap left by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil choke points.
This marks Prabowo’s first trip to the Philippines. The Indonesian leader had only returned from a visit to France about three weeks ago. Prabowo has defended his frequent travels as being aimed at securing oil supplies.
