PPP Announces Support for Ganjar Pranowo’s Presidential Bid
Yogyakarta. The United Development Party, or PPP, announced on Wednesday that it supports the nomination of Ganjar Pranowo as a candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
The PPP is the second party after the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) to join the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) in nominating Ganjar.
“After thorough meetings and discussions, the PPP decided that Mr. Ganjar Pranowo is our presidential candidate for the 2024 elections,” PPP Chairman Muhamad Mardiono said at his residence in the Yogyakarta town of Sleman.
The announcement came a day after the party’s national congress and a meeting by the advisory council.
“All party members including those living in foreign countries are bound by the decision,” Mardiono said.
Ganjar is the only firm presidential candidate so far with the backing of political parties whose combined seats in the House of Representatives exceed the 20 percent threshold.
Former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan was earlier confirmed as a candidate by the National Democratic Party (Nasdem). Still, the party needs to forge a coalition to reach the threshold and get him on the ballot.
Another potential contender is Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, whose Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) also must build a coalition before all parties are required to register their candidates with the General Election Commission on October 19.
