Police to Probe Alleged Corruption in 2024 National Sports Week
Jakarta. The National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) will launch an investigation into allegations of corruption related to the 2024 National Sports Week (PON) in Aceh and North Sumatra, as reported by Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo.
Police Public Relations Division Head Kombes Erdi A. Chaniago confirmed that a special task force has been established, comprising personnel from Bareskrim as well as Aceh and North Sumatra police.
“The task force includes personnel from Bareskrim, the Aceh Police, and the North Sumatra Police,” Chaniago told reporters on Friday.
The task force is set to address public complaints about the PON event's organization.
“The task force aims to shed light on public grievances related to the PON, including issues raised by athletes and organizers,” Chaniago added.
The task force will monitor and interview witnesses to uncover any evidence of corruption.
“Currently, the task force is actively working, and we will provide updates once the investigation is finalized,” Chaniago said.
Earlier, Minister Dito Ariotedjo announced plans to report alleged misuse of funds allocated for the 2024 PON. The event, which began earlier this month, is the first to be held across two provinces—Aceh and North Sumatra—and features nearly 13,000 athletes.
Reports emerged on social media of athletes struggling with inadequate facilities, including muddy paths and makeshift wooden boards. Minister Dito stated that he intends to file the report with both the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department and the Attorney General's Office, as these bodies are tasked with overseeing PON.
“We hope this PON will be successful despite the challenges,” Dito remarked.
The PON, which runs until September 20, features competitions in 65 sports.
