New Zealand Pilot’s Remains Recovered Following Armed Assault in Papua
Timika. The body of Glen Malcolm Conning, the 50-year-old New Zealand pilot who was killed by an armed criminal group (KKB), was evacuated from Alama Airport to Timika, Central Papua, on Tuesday.
Three Army and Air Force helicopters were deployed for the operation. The body is now at the Mimika Regional Hospital for examination.
"The pilot’s body arrived at 12:50 p.m. local time and is currently at RSUD Mimika for a post-mortem examination," said Bayu Suseno, the spokesperson for the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force.
According to Faizal Ramadhani, Head of the Cartenz Task Force, Conning's body was burned along with the MD500 ER PK-IWN helicopter after being taken hostage and murdered by the armed group. The motives behind the attack remain unclear.
The helicopter was initially transporting healthcare workers and children from Mozes Kilangin Timika Airport to Alama District. Upon arrival, the armed group intercepted them, forced everyone out, and then killed the pilot.
All passengers, local residents of Alama District, are reported to be safe. The helicopter was carrying six passengers, including four adults and two children.
