Nearly 50,000 Members of Police, Military Deployed Ahead of Thursday's Election Dispute Verdict
Jakarta. Nearly 50,000 members of the police and military were set to be deployed in Jakarta on Thursday ahead of the Constitutional Court's announcement of its verdict in the election dispute brought by defeated presidential candidate pair Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno.
The Prabowo camp's legal team filed the dispute against the General Elections Commission (KPU) on May 24, claiming massive and systematic fraud in the April 17 presidential election, won by the incumbent, Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, and his running mate Ma'ruf Amin.
The court started hearing evidence on June 14, when lawyers for the opposition requested that Prabowo and Sandiaga be declared the actual winners of the election.
The trial concluded on June 21, when the panel of nine judges began deliberating the facts before issuing a verdict, which was initially expected on Friday.
"Total personnel of 47,000 will guard the Constitutional Court, headquarters of the KPU and Election Supervisory Agency [Bawaslu] and other key points in Jakarta. About 13,000 members of the police and military will be deployed outside the court," Jakarta Police spokesman Chief Comr. Argo Yuwono said on Wednesday
Police will not allow any rallies near the court building in Central Jakarta and urged people to watch the reading of the verdict on television, as it will be broadcast live.
"The chief of the Jakarta Police and head of the National Police's intelligence unit will not approve any requests to hold rallies in front of the Constitutional Court," National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said on Tuesday.
Militants Enter Jakarta
Moeldoko, the presidential chief of staff, meanwhile said on Wednesday that about 30 members of a terrorist group had entered Jakarta and planned to launch attacks.
"A terrorist group has been preparing [to launch an attack]; about 30 people have entered Jakarta. We are aware of their presence and have them under surveillance," Moeldoko said, as quoted by Metro TV.
He urged all parties to respect the Constitutional Court's decision and to allow the reconciliation process to continue for the sake of the nation.
Prabowo has urged his supporters not to stage any rallies during the court trial and to respect the legal process.
National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said police are ready to deal with any potential threats.
"We continue monitoring supporters [of terror groups] who may launch lone-wolf attacks. If we have enough evidence … we will carry out preventive strikes," Dedi told Metro TV on Wednesday evening.
He said at least 10 groups comprised of between 2,000 and 3,000 members have indicated that they planned to hold rallies in front of the Constitutional Court buildings on Thursday.
