Mount Merapi Erupts with 21 Lava Flows, Alert Level Raised to III
Sleman. Mount Merapi in Central Java emitted 21 lava flows on early Thursday. The Center for the Investigation and Development of Geological Disaster Technology (BPPTKG) has raised the volcano's status to Level III, indicating an alert.
Agus Budi Santoso, head of BPPTKG Yogyakarta, reported that observations from 00:00 to 06:00 a.m. Jakarta time confirmed the lava flows moving toward Kali Bebeng. "This lava fall can travel a maximum distance of 1,500 meters," Agus said.
BPPTKG currently advises residents to avoid activities in designated danger zones. "Seismic data recorded 40 instances of cluster earthquakes," he added.
Agus noted that if an explosive eruption occurs, volcanic material could reach up to 3 kilometers from the peak. In the southeast sector, the threat may extend to the Woro River up to 3 kilometers and the Gendol River as far as 5 kilometers from the volcano.
BPPTKG has also cautioned the public to remain vigilant regarding the dangers of lava and hot clouds, particularly during rainfall. Residents living near Mount Merapi should prepare for potential disturbances from volcanic ash. If there are significant changes in Mount Merapi's activity, BPPTKG will immediately reassess the situation and provide updated information.
