More Indonesian Women to Join UN Peacekeeping Mission, Says FM
Jakarta. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi claimed that more and more Indonesian women have joined the global efforts to promote peace, as she addressed the 43rd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday.
During the Good Human Rights Stories Initiatives arranged by the European Union, Retno described the role of Indonesian women in spreading the value of peace, tolerance, and multiculturalism.
"The role of Indonesian women in promoting peace is not only done at the national level but also at the regional and global levels," Retno said.
For instance, the number of Indonesian women peacekeepers continues to increase and will remain in the future. Indonesian women's forces in several UN peace missions in numerous countries received appreciation from the local community, she said.
In addition, Indonesia will form the Southeast Asia Network of Women Peace Negotiators and Mediators to strengthen the contribution of women in promoting sustainable peace in the region.
Indonesia will also launch the Afghanistan-Indonesia Women's Network to encourage the contribution of Afghan women in the peace process in Afghanistan.
"In early March, together with Indonesian women leaders, I planned to visit Kabul to formalize the establishment of the Afghanistan-Indonesia Women's Network," Retno said.
On the occasion of the event, several countries such as South Korea, Gambia, and Argentina presented films on the success stories of women in empowering their communities.
Indonesia also presented a film on the roles and actions of Indonesian women since Indonesia's independence and today's development.
It is the third time that Indonesia participated in the Good Human Rights Stories Initiatives forum. Previously, Indonesia was present as a speaker at two previous meetings held in the UN General Assembly in New York.
"For years, when human rights are mentioned in a sentence, the public perception was immediately negative and what came to our mind was human rights violation. But actually, human rights also mean empowerment, improvement, and equality," Retro said.
