Medan Students Apologize after Prank Goes Too Far
Medan. The internet was astounded by an amateur video that circulated, depicting what appeared to be five "dead bodies" within a water tank located on the parking premises of a university building in Medan.
However, a second video emerged to reveal it was merely a prank.
The footage, which went viral on Tuesday, shows an unidentified individual lifting the cover of a water tank on the roof of Prima Indonesia University building, revealing what he described as a collection of "dead bodies."
The video swiftly disseminated across online platforms, prompting media queries regarding the absence of a police inquiry into the matter.
Although the Medan Metropolitan Police dispatched a team of investigators, upon their arrival, the scene had been cleared.
Head of the Medan Police's criminal investigation unit, Comr. Teuku Fathir Mustafa, said that despite searching all 15 floors of the building and interviewing numerous witnesses, no substantial leads were found.
The forensic team from the North Sumatra provincial police was even deployed to probe the situation on the ninth-floor parking grounds.
"We are seeking clarification from the university regarding the alleged bodies and their identities, and the reasons behind their arrangement within the building. Our investigation is ongoing," Teuku said on Wednesday morning.
Shortly afterward, another video emerged featuring six young men who confessed to fabricating the false video.
One of the individuals, speaking from the group, identified themselves as students of Prima Indonesia University. They clarified that the supposed human bodies showcased in the water tank were, in fact, mannequins.
"Through this video, we express our sincere apologies for disseminating false information," said the man positioned in the center.
Identifying his friend, the one who filmed the mannequin video, as Heryanto, he revealed, "The earlier video depicted mannequins, not actual human bodies. It was a fabricated scenario that stirred public anxiety."
"We voluntarily issue this statement to convey our remorse for our actions, and we extend our apologies to everyone affected by the distress caused," added another member of the group.
