Makassar. A woman was interrogated after a video emerged showing her slapping an officer, police said Friday.

In the video that went viral on social media, the woman, whose identity wasn’t disclosed, verbally attacked the low-ranking officer with profanities and slapped him in the face.

The officer maintained his composure and tried to calm the woman without using force. He eventually left the scene with other members of his unit.

He has been identified as 2nd Sub-Inspector Edwin, a member of the community police in the Ujung Tanah sub-district in the South Sulawesi capital, Makassar.

Edwin suffered shallow cuts on his neck from nail scratches, Makassar Port Police Chief Yudi Frianto said.

During the incident on Thursday, Edwin and his unit were deployed to support the municipal police in serving warnings to owners of kiosks illegally built on the walls surrounding a large oil depot belonging to the state-run oil company Pertamina.

“The warning letter is based on a request by Pertamina regarding its plan to enforce regulations against kiosks attached to the walls," Yudi said.

Pertamina has intensified efforts to remove illegal buildings very close to its oil depots to create a buffer zone and keep communities at a safe distance since a devastating fire at its depot in North Jakarta last March that killed at least 19 people.

Yudi said as soon as officers arrived at the scene, kiosk owners approached them to resist the warning.

“A woman acted violently against our officer, who suffered cuts on his neck as a result,” Yudi said.

It remains unclear if the woman has been charged with criminal offenses.
