Luhut Plans to Focus on Agricultural Research After Retirement
Magelang, Central Java. Chief Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has announced plans to engage in agricultural research following the conclusion of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration next month.
"I'm not entirely sure what I'll be doing after October 20, but I have plans in the agricultural sector and will be involved in genome sequencing research at a research center," Luhut said during a visit to Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday.
The retired army general is known as one of President Jokowi's most versatile ministers, having been tasked with a wide range of responsibilities, from managing the Covid-19 pandemic response to organizing the G20 Summit in Bali.
Luhut was also entrusted with overseeing the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train project and was recently appointed to lead the task force responsible for attracting new investments in the future national capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan.
The 76-year-old has been a member of President Jokowi’s cabinet since 2014, holding various roles including presidential chief of staff and coordinating minister for political, legal, and security affairs before assuming his current position.
“I understand there have been both positive outcomes and challenges along the way, and I apologize for any shortcomings. But I am proud of my contributions to the republic," Luhut said.
He also praised President Jokowi for laying a strong foundation for Indonesia’s future economic growth, noting that the benefits will be felt for years to come.
"In my view, President Joko Widodo has laid a very strong foundation. We’ve embraced digitalization, initiated downstream industrialization, and become more transparent in many areas. Of course, there’s still room for improvement," Luhut said.
