Subang. A powerful lightning strike on Thursday hit a mining shelter in Subang regency, resulting in the death of one miner and injuries to seven others.

The incident unfolded when ten workers sought refuge from heavy rain in the shelter, with the lightning hitting both the ground and the structure.

The victim, identified as Abdul Muis Mantunainai, a local villager, sustained an open wound in the left hip and suffered serious burns across his body.

Dasim, a 50-year-old survivor, described the strike as instantaneous but with disastrous consequences.

"It all happened suddenly. I only remember chaos and smoke engulfing the area afterward,” Dasim said. “There were 10 of us in the shelter; eight were hit, and one died.”

Deadly lightning strikes are common in the tropical country. In November, three farmers died after a lightning strike while seeking shelter from rain in a hut in the middle of a paddy field in Gowa, South Sulawesi.

In May of the same year, a teenager was fatally struck by lightning while using his cellphone on the coast of Lumajang, East Java. In a separate incident during the same month, nine climbers were struck by lightning on the slope of Mount Seminung in Lampung province, resulting in one fatality.
