Lawmaker Opposes Return to Online Classes Under Energy-Saving Policy
Jakarta. Deputy Chair of Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR) MY Esti Wijayanti has opposed a proposal to reintroduce online learning starting in April 2026.
The proposal has emerged as part of an energy-saving policy being considered by the government in response to a global energy crisis driven by prolonged geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Indonesia is preparing a sweeping energy-efficiency strategy that could reshape schooling and working patterns, including hybrid learning in schools and a once-a-week work-from-home policy to reduce fuel consumption.
Esti argued that online learning is ineffective, citing Indonesia’s experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, and said the policy requires deeper evaluation.
“Online learning was implemented during the COVID-19 outbreak, and we all know it created complex problems in our education system,” Esti said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Monday.
She pointed to challenges such as students’ ability to absorb lessons, discipline, character development, and technological limitations.
Referring to the pandemic period, she highlighted “learning loss,” a phenomenon in which students become disengaged and neglect their studies, leading to declining cognitive abilities even after returning to in-person classes.
Online learning has also affected students’ psychological well-being and physical health, she added.
“It is difficult to address affective aspects such as personality, attitude, and character through online systems,” Esti said.
She urged the government to consider alternative measures rather than implementing online learning as part of its energy-saving efforts.
The government is currently drafting budget-efficiency strategies across ministries and agencies to ensure the 2026 state budget deficit remains below 3%.
Several flagship programs, including the free nutritious meal initiative and the Red-and-White village cooperatives, will not be affected by the efficiency measures.
Separately, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the programs are excluded from budget cuts as they are considered long-term investments in economic growth and public welfare.
