Lawmaker Haerul Amri Dies During Trip to South Sumatra
Jakarta. Haerul Amri, a member of the House of Representatives representing the National Democratic Party (Nasdem), passed away on Monday during a visit to Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra. He was 51 years old.
Haerul had recently been reelected as a representative for East Java’s 2nd electoral district, with the inauguration of the new House term scheduled for October.
Affectionately known as Gus Aam, Haerul was also a revered figure within the Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama, where he served as treasurer and deputy chairman of the organization’s youth wing, GP Anshor.
"I'm so sorry about the passing of Gus Aam. He was a good man," GP Anshor Head Addin Jauharudin said.
Haerul assumed office as a representative on January 26, 2022, filling a House seat vacated by fellow Nasdem politician Hasan Aminudin, who resigned. He was appointed to Commission IX, responsible for overseeing health and manpower.
In addition to his legislative duties, Haerul led Nasdem's youth affairs and sports division, while also serving as the party's deputy chairman.
A statement from Nasdem highlighted Haerul's active advocacy for scholarships aimed at supporting students from low-income families.
"We are deeply saddened by the news of Gus Aam's passing this afternoon. He was one of our finest cadres, and his loss is a significant blow to the party," Nasdem executive Tatang Irawan said in a statement.
