Jorge Martin Wins Indonesian GP, Extends Championship Lead
Mandalika. Jorge Martin delivered a commanding performance at the Indonesian Grand Prix on Sunday, leading from start to finish and overcoming previous misfortunes at Mandalika Circuit, where he had never completed a Sunday race before.
The Spanish rider's victory extended his championship lead from 12 to 21 points over reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia, who finished third after a challenging start in a race where only 12 riders made it to the finish line.
Bagnaia struggled off the line, dropping to sixth in the opening laps before finding his rhythm later in the race. He eventually crossed the line 5.5 seconds behind Martin.
Martin seized control of the race from the moment the lights went out, maintaining his lead as fierce battles unfolded behind him in the hot and demanding conditions of the seaside circuit on Lombok Island.
Pedro Acosta secured second place after making several impressive overtakes early on. Enea Bastianini, who was running in third place, crashed on Lap 21 while chasing Martin, missing the chance to recreate their thrilling last-lap duel from Misano just a week prior.
Former world champion Marc Marquez was forced to retire on Lap 12 after his Ducati engine caught fire.
The opening lap saw the drama unfold as four riders crashed out following an incident triggered by Jack Miller’s fall in the middle of the pack, which also took out Aleix Espargaro, Alex Marquez, and Luca Marini.
Martin had already made headlines on Saturday by setting a new lap record at Mandalika to secure pole position. However, his sprint race that day ended in disappointment when he crashed early, ultimately finishing tenth.
The Indonesian Grand Prix marks the 15th race of the MotoGP season and kicks off the five-race Asian tour. The next stop is Japan, with the race scheduled for next week.
