Jakarta. The teenage suspect behind the November 7 explosion at a Jakarta public high school mosque had been living only with his father following his parents’ divorce, police said Wednesday.

The blast at State Senior High School (SMAN) 72 occurred during Friday prayers, injuring 96 people, including students and teachers. Thirteen students remain hospitalized with serious injuries.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released because he is a minor, also suffered severe head wounds and is being treated at Bhayangkara Police Hospital.

Jakarta Metropolitan Police spokesman Chief Commissioner Bhudi Hermanto said investigators had questioned the suspect’s father and several witnesses. “The mother has not been examined as she currently works abroad,” Hermanto told reporters at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang.

Police confirmed that the suspect’s parents had been separated for some time. “From a family perspective, the parents have long been apart. This clearly created a problem for the child. There’s a humanitarian aspect here that we must handle with empathy,” Bhudi said.

In an earlier press briefing, investigators revealed that the suspect experienced psychological distress and loneliness prior to the attack. He reportedly felt he had no one to confide in -- either at home or at school.

An examination of the suspect’s digital activities showed he had been active on online forums that glorified violence and appeared inspired by individuals who carried out mass killings abroad. Police said he had written the names of such attackers on a toy weapon found at the scene.

Officers also discovered that the student had brought seven homemade explosives to school -- four detonated, while three were defused by the Jakarta Police bomb squad.

Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri confirmed that, based on preliminary findings, the student acted alone. “There is no indication of involvement from any organized terror network,” Asep said.
