Jakarta. The Jakarta Traffic Police revealed on Thursday that most of the VIP license plates used by motorists in the capital city are fake.

Police recently issued the exclusive identifier “ZZ” for license plates reserved for high-ranking state officials, replacing the previous identifiers “RF” and “QH” which have been misused by private vehicle owners.

However, within just five months since the launch of a new identifier, fake ZZ code has been put on by many unauthorized vehicle owners, Jakarta Traffic Police Director Chief Comr. Latif Usman told reporters.

"Our personnel often detected the use of fake identifiers when dealing with traffic offenders," Latif said.

Positioned at the end of the alphanumeric sequence on the plate, the identifier is exclusively intended for high-ranking military and police officers and state officials with a minimum rank of echelon 2.

Many private vehicle owners illegally used the exclusive identifier to avoid police stops or enjoy some privilege during traffic jams.

"The truth is the legitimate owners of this exclusive identifier aren’t exempt from the law when committing traffic offenses," he added.
