Dubai, UAE. Iran launched a new wave of attacks on Thursday targeting Israeli territory and American bases, while warning that the United States would “bitterly regret” sinking an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean. A senior Iranian cleric also called for violence against US. President Donald Trump, as Israel said it had begun a “large-scale” assault on Tehran.

Israel reported multiple incoming missile attacks, with air raid sirens sounding in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Iranian state television said additional strikes targeted US bases in the region.

The Israeli military said it had launched targeted attacks in Lebanon against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group and carried out a “large-scale wave of strikes against infrastructure” in Iran’s capital, without providing further details. Explosions were reported at several locations in Tehran shortly afterward.

The escalation follows a US naval strike earlier this week. The US Navy sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena on Tuesday night in the Indian Ocean, killing at least 87 Iranian sailors.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the attack, calling it “an atrocity at sea.”

“Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning,” he wrote on social media. “Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set.”

In a rare clerical statement, Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli said Iran was “on the verge of a great test” and called on state television for “the shedding of Zionist blood” and violence against Trump.

The conflict began Saturday when the United States and Israel launched strikes targeting Iran’s leadership, missile arsenal, and nuclear program, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to officials.

Leaders in Washington and Tel Aviv have suggested that removing Iran’s ruling system could be an objective, though the scope and timeline of the campaign remain unclear, raising the prospect of a prolonged conflict.

The war has killed more than 1,000 people in Iran, more than 70 in Lebanon and about a dozen in Israel, according to officials in those countries. The fighting has also disrupted global oil and gas supplies, slowed international shipping and stranded hundreds of thousands of travelers across the Middle East.
