Iran Says Its Attacks on Israel Are Self-Defense
Jakarta. Iran has said that its recent attacks on Israel were part of “self-defense” as the latter had repeatedly violated the ceasefire.
“[We are] exercising our inherent right of self-defense as stated in Article 51 of the UN,” the Iranian Embassy in Jakarta wrote on Monday.
The embassy went on to reaffirm its country’s “strong determination to defend security and national interests when necessary”. Tehran also accused Israel and the US of “acts of maritime piracy”.
“The US government holds responsibility for the ceasefire violations by the Zionist regime and the subsequent consequences, including escalation in the region,” the embassy said.
Iran had launched missiles toward northern Israel on Sunday evening. The war had erupted after the US and Israel made a surprise attack on Tehran in late February. On April 8, the US and Iran agreed to a ceasefire. The fighting had also led to disruptions to the traffic at the Strait of Hormuz.
