Jakarta. The Batam Immigration Office has deported a Japanese national, Yusuke Yamazaki, who was wanted by Interpol for fraud. 

According to a press statement released on Wednesday, Yamazaki, aged 42, was initially apprehended on Jan. 31 by the Water and Air Police Unit of the Barelang City Police Resort in the waters surrounding Bulan Island, Bulang Subdistrict, Batam City.

In the course of an inspection, a vessel containing seven people was found, comprising two male crew members and five passengers, which included one male foreign national, two Indonesian males, and two Indonesian females.

"This discovery is the result of collaboration between the Batam Immigration Office and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in collaboration with the Water and Air Police Unit of the Barelang City Police, as well as the International Relations Division of the Indonesian National Police," stated a press release from the Batam Class I Special Immigration Office received by Beritasatu.com on Wednesday.

After thorough interrogation at sea, the Water and Air Police Unit of the Barelang City Police suspected that four of the Indonesian passengers were non-procedural Indonesian migrant workers heading to Malaysia. The comprehensive examination continued by bringing all passengers, including the two crew members and the foreign national, to the Barelang City Police Precinct.

It was revealed that the foreign national lacked identification cards and other documents. Throughout the examination process conducted by the police and immigration authorities, Yamazaki claimed to be Hajime Hatanaka, born in Nagoya, Japan.

However, through further coordination and investigation by the Directorate of Immigration along with biometric data collection by the police, the true identity of the Interpol-listed fugitive, Yusuke Yamazaki, was unveiled.

Yamazaki is wanted by Interpol under the blue notice status for defrauding 740 Japanese citizens in his home country from December 2018 to February 2019, resulting in losses amounting to 4 billion Yen.

The Batam Immigration Office then collaborated with the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta and the Japanese Consulate General in Medan to issue travel documents for Yusuke on Feb. 28.

The deportation of Yusuke Yamazaki took place on Tuesday. Subsequently, legal proceedings will be undertaken by the Japanese government upon his arrival in Japan.
