Indonesia’s Oldest Pilgrim, 109, Arrives Home from Mecca
Ponorogo, East Java. A 109-year-old man, who became the oldest Indonesian pilgrim during the recent Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, arrived in his hometown of Ponorogo, East Java, on Thursday evening, healthy and happy.
Harjo Mislan spent 1 month and 13 days performing the annual Muslim ritual, accompanied by his 66-year-old son, Sirmad.
As the bus convoy carrying more than 600 pilgrims arrived in Ponorogo, family members greeted him with emotional embraces.
Harjo walked down the bus steps before resting in a wheelchair provided by his family. Touched by the sight, others came to greet him and kiss his hand.
“I have passed a century. I’m an old timer,” Harjo told reporters.
When asked about his physical condition during the ritual in the Saudi holy cities of Mecca and Medina, Harjo said he had a fever for a while but overall felt fine.
“That’s the only illness I got,” he said.
