Maros, South Sulawesi. A Sukhoi fighter jet operated by the Indonesian Air Force reportedly overran the western runway at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Maros, South Sulawesi, on Monday.

Amateur video circulating on social media showed the fighter jet stopping at the end of Runway 13, with its nose pointing downward after apparently failing to stop before reaching the runway’s end.

The incident occurred near the Maros-Makassar main road, where crowds of residents and motorists stopped to watch the aircraft, causing traffic congestion in the area.

Indonesian Air Force personnel and police were deployed to secure the site and manage traffic. White banners were also placed along the runway fence to limit motorists’ view of the incident.

The airport operator confirmed the incident on Runway 13 and said efforts to handle the aircraft were underway.

“Based on the viral video circulating on social media, we can confirm that the incident occurred on the western runway, Runway 13, at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport. Handling efforts are currently underway,” Taufan Yudhistira, acting head of the airport’s Branch Communication and CSR Department, said.

The airport said the incident had not disrupted flight operations. Flights at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport continued to operate normally using the north-south Runway 03-21.

“Airport and flight operations at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport continue to run smoothly. Flight operations are using the north-south runway, Runway 03-21,” Taufan said.

The Indonesian Air Force had not issued an official statement on the incident as of Monday.
