Jakarta. Indonesia has imposed a nationwide ban on freight trucks using toll roads until January 4, 2026, as part of measures to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said on Sunday that the government had decided to apply the restriction continuously, without time-based exemptions, following an evaluation of traffic conditions.

“Our evaluation led us to impose restrictions on freight transport on toll roads without using window time arrangements. The restriction will apply continuously without interruption until January 4, 2026,” Dudy said in a statement.

Previously, freight truck restrictions on toll roads allowed exemptions during certain hours and days. Under the new policy, those time-based allowances have been removed.

However, trucks carrying essential goods such as food supplies, fuel, and emergency items are exempt from the ban.

Dudy said the policy would remain flexible, with situational evaluations continuing, particularly if there are significant changes in traffic flow. “This restriction will continue to be assessed to ensure it remains proportional, effective, and prioritizes the safety of road users,” he said.

For arterial or non-toll roads, freight transport restrictions will apply daily from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Logistics operators and freight transport businesses have been urged to adjust travel plans, reorganize supply chains, and optimize distribution schedules to maintain efficiency and order during the holiday period, Dudy added.
