‘He Was Critical of the Government in a Constructive Way’: Luhut Pays Tribute to Faisal Basri
Jakarta. Chief Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan paid tribute to the late renowned economist Faisal Basri on Thursday, visiting his home in South Jakarta to honor his contributions to the nation’s economy. Faisal, widely respected for his constructive critiques of government policies, passed away earlier in the day at the age of 65.
Luhut highlighted Faisal’s significant role during the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly his input on maintaining economic stability amid the crisis.
“The last time I met Mr. Faisal was in 2021, during the pandemic. His advice was invaluable in shaping our public movement restrictions from an economic perspective,” Luhut recalled. “His insights helped us strike a balance between health measures and sustaining the economy.”
Faisal also offered critical perspectives on the government’s policies regarding the export ban on raw ores and minerals, such as nickel, which encouraged a focus on downstream industries to boost the value of the country’s mining products, Luhut said.
“Although we didn’t always agree, I had great respect for his thoughts and arguments,” Luhut added. “He was direct in expressing his views but remained humble and open to other perspectives.”
Luhut described Faisal as a true economist, dedicated to using his extensive knowledge for the betterment of the people.
“Faisal was critical of the government but in a way that was constructive. He had my utmost respect,” Luhut said. “Indonesia has lost a great thinker.”
Faisal, a graduate of the University of Indonesia, passed away at 3:50 a.m. at Mayapada Hospital in Jakarta, where he was being treated for a heart attack, his family confirmed in a statement.
