Jakarta. The gunman who fired a gun at the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) building had insisted to meet with the council's chairman in person before he died on Tuesday, Jakarta Police Chief  Inp. Gen. Karyoto said as new details about the incident emerged after the preliminary investigation.

The man was identified as Mustopa NR, 60, from Pesawaran Regency, Lampung, according to the ID card seized by police.

"The man got into the building from the main entrance and looked for the MUI chairman. But he was stopped by internal security guards because he didn't say his intention," Karyoto told reporters at the scene.

"He then brandished a gun containing small pellets with a gas tube that we call an airsoft gun -- it's not classified as a firearm," the officer added.

Mustopa fired the gun that smashed the glass door into pieces and injured two persons.

He passed out after an altercation with security personnel at the lobby and was later pronounced dead.

"He was still alive when I took him down. He pointed the gun at my face but I managed to grab it from him and slammed him down. I remember him resisting," security guard Chaeruddin told Beritasatu news website.

It was learned that Mustopa had visited MUI the building several times before Tuesday.

"He asked to be facilitated for a meeting with the MUI chairman several times. He also proclaimed himself as a prophet," said Nugrahadi Bambal, who works as a receptionist in the building.

Mustopa left a letter containing threats to shoot state officials "particularly MUI people" with firearms, claiming that he had been deprived of his right to justice.

But nothing in the letter could tell more about him or why he wanted to meet the MUI chairman so eagerly.

Police said an autopsy will be conducted on Mustopa's body to determine the cause of his death.
