Gov’t Data Center Hit by Ransomware Attack Demanding $8 Million: Minister
Jakarta. The temporary national data center was recently hit by a ransomware attack demanding a ransom of $8 million, Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi said on Monday.
The cyber attack has caused major disruptions to the immigration office’s online services nationwide over the past week.
Budi said the attack was triggered by the “LockBit 3.0 virus."
"They demanded a ransom which, according to my team, amounts to $8 million," Budi said at the State Palace in Jakarta before attending a cabinet meeting.
He didn’t provide further details about the ransomware attack but mentioned that his office is collaborating with the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN), the National Police, and state-owned telecommunications company Telkom to restore the national data center.
