Golkar Aims for 20 Pct of House Seats in 2024
Jakarta. Golkar Party has set a target to win at least 116 seats in the House of Representatives in the 2024 elections that will grant a ticket for the party’s presidential candidate five years later, a party executive said on Sunday.
The elections law sets a threshold of 20 percent of 580 House seats for a party to nominate a candidate on its own.
To achieve the target, Golkar is fielding quality candidates for lawmakers, Golkar Deputy Chairman Ahmad Doli Kurnia said on the sidelines of the party’s national conference in Jakarta.
"For the legislative elections, our target is to win at least 20 percent of House seats, equivalent to 116,” Doli said.
As for the presidential election, Doli underlined that Golkar’s decision from the previous congress to nominate Chairman Airlangga Hartarto as a candidate remains unchanged.
It’s up to the chairman himself whether he will run in the race or lend Golkar’s support to another candidate, Doli added.
"During the current Golkar national conference, we reiterated our commitment that we give the chairman the full mandate to decide the appropriate strategy, moves, and momentum for the presidential election,” he said.
With less than 15 percent of House seats currently, Golkar needs to build a coalition with another party to put Airlangga on the ballots next year.
The national conference was attended by 459 participants from 38 provinces and the central leadership board.
