Garut, West Java. Authorities in Garut announced an extraordinary event status on Wednesday after more than 280 elementary and high school students suffered food poisoning from government-provided meals, the latest in a string of incidents linked to the nationwide free nutritious meal program.

The designation means all medical treatment and care for victims will be fully covered by the local government, Garut Regent Abdusy Syakur Amin told reporters.

“Once more than two people are affected, it qualifies as an extraordinary event. Last night we decided to declare this status in Garut,” Abdusy said.

Hundreds of Children Sickened
The poisoning occurred on Tuesday in Kadungora district, where at least 282 students fell ill. Of them, 131 required treatment at clinics and hospitals, while others were treated at home.

“I saw several children starting to recover, and hopefully they can soon return home,” Abdusy added.

The Garut incident adds to mounting scrutiny of President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship free meal program. Government data show that since its launch in January, more than 6,500 schoolchildren across Indonesia have been affected by food poisoning cases linked to the scheme.

This was not the first case in Garut. On September 16, at least 657 students from elementary to high school levels suffered food poisoning after consuming government-provided meals.

Abdusy urged meal providers appointed by the central government to work closely with the Garut Health Office to ensure stricter quality control and hygiene.

Meanwhile, local authorities and police are investigating unreported cases to ensure all victims receive medical attention.
