Ganjar Wants Police Chief to Testify in Presidential Election Dispute
Jakarta. Defeated presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo on Tuesday urged the Constitutional Court to summon National Police Chief Listyo Sigit as a witness in the ongoing presidential dispute trial.
Listyo needs to clarify allegations of attempts by police personnel to influence voters, a lawyer representing Ganjar's presidential campaign said.
"We have formally requested the court to present the police chief in the upcoming hearing,” said Todung Mulya Lubis, the head of Ganjar’s legal team.
"Why the police chief? Because many allegations require explanation such as voter intimidation and partiality by the police force during the campaign period. We request the police chief to explain and show accountability," Todung added.
Chief Justice Suhartoyo said the request has been taken into consideration although he indicated that the hearing schedules may not allow him to summon more witnesses.
"We will be discussing this matter with all justices," Suhartoyo said.
Speaking separately, the police chief said he will be “glad to honor a summons by the court” as a witness in the election dispute.
The Ganjar camp has previously accused police interference in the election favoring eventual election winner Prabowo Subianto.
