Jakarta. Former Democratic Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin, who was convicted for graft in the Hambalang Sports Complex corruption case back in 2012, was released from the Sukamiskin prison in Bandung on Sunday. He was granted a leave of absence ahead of his official release from the special prison reserved for Indonesia's biggest corruptors.

"An inmate named M. Nazaruddin was released on Sunday, June 14, at 7.45 a.m. for a leave of absence ahead of his release from prison," West Java's correctional affairs head, Abdul Aris, said in a statement on Tuesday,

The leave of absence (CMB) was granted to Nazaruddin through a decree from Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly, issued on June 10.

The leave of absence is supposed to last from June 14 to Aug. 13.

Nazaruddin was convicted in two different corruption cases. First, on April 20, 2012, the former House of Representatives (DPR) member was sentenced to 4 years and 10 months in prison and fined Rp 200 million ($14,100) by the Jakarta Corruption Court.

He was proven to have received a bribe of Rp 4.6 billion from Duta Graha Indah (DGI) marketing manager Mohammad El Idris. The money was given through two Permai Group finance officers, Yulianis and Oktarina Fury.

Nazaruddin also owned shares in DGI, which has now changed its name to Nusa Konstruksi Enjiniring.

The politician was supposed to help the company win the tender to build an Athletes' Village for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Palembang, South Sumatra.

The Supreme Court upped Nazaruddin's sentence to 7 years in prison and a Rp 300 million fine.

While serving his sentence, on June 15, 2016, Nazaruddin again was convicted for gratuity and money laundering.

He was sentenced to 6 years in prison and fined Rp 1 billion or an additional 1 year in jail.

Nazaruddin was proven to have received gratuities totaling Rp 40.37 billion from DGI and Nindya Karya for several projects in the education and health sectors.

The Democratic Party treasurer used the money to buy Garuda Indonesia shares in 2011 through a Permai Group subsidiary.

Nazaruddin's total sentence amounted to 13 years in prison in the two cases.
