Flights Canceled at Bali Airport After Mount Lewotobi Eruption Disrupts Travel
Denpasar. Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport canceled 24 flights on Monday following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, disrupting travel plans for passengers heading to and from Australia, Singapore, South Korea, and Labuan Bajo.
“Based on the data we received as of 3:30 p.m., several airlines operating flights to Labuan Bajo, Australia, Singapore, and South Korea confirmed cancellations and delays,” said Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, on Monday.
The canceled flights included six Virgin Australia flights to and from Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Sydney, and 16 Jetstar Airways flights on routes including Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, and Singapore. AirAsia Indonesia also canceled a flight to Labuan Bajo.
In addition, Qantas Airways flights to Sydney and Melbourne, as well as an Air Busan flight to Busan, experienced delays, Syaugi said.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted again at 11:05 a.m. local time on Monday, sending an ash column 18,000 meters above its peak. While volcanic ash movement was monitored closely throughout the day, as of 3:30 p.m., the ash had not entered Bali’s airspace, allowing other airport operations to continue normally.
“We recognize that arrivals and departures in Bali have been impacted by this volcanic disaster,” Syaugi said.
Airlines are currently assisting affected passengers with rescheduling or processing refund requests via email, reducing the need for passengers to come to the airport. For those already at the airport, help desks have been set up on the second floor of the international terminal and in the domestic ticketing area to assist with rebooking and refund processing.
