Jakarta. An early morning explosion tore through a residential neighborhood in South Tangerang, just south of the Indonesian capital, destroying homes and injuring several people on Friday.

Police said they are still investigating the cause of the blast, which occurred around 5:15 a.m. on Jalan Talas II in Pamulang District.

Videos shared on social media showed chaotic scenes as residents carried injured victims -- including women and elderly people -- on their backs to safety. Collapsed roofs and piles of building debris were visible across the neighborhood.

“It was a powerful explosion that could be heard from 500 meters away. Roofs collapsed, and at least seven people suffered burns. But there was no fire,” said Matsuro, a local resident.

He added that the explosion may have originated from cooking gas cylinders.

At least three adjoining houses were completely flattened, while 10 more sustained lighter damage. Emergency services have cordoned off the area as investigators continue to examine the site.
