New York. Democrats scored a stunning double victory in Texas on Tuesday, capturing both a US Senate seat and the governorship in a major political upset that dealt a significant blow to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.

The double upset shook a cornerstone of American conservatism, where no Democrat had won statewide office since 1994.

James Talarico defeated Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a close Trump ally, in the US Senate race, according to projections by NBC News and CBS News. The victory marked a major breakthrough for Democrats in a state long considered a Republican stronghold.

In another dramatic result, Democratic state lawmaker Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott, ending his tenure and delivering one of the party's most significant gubernatorial victories.

CNN and NBC News projected Hinojosa as the winner.

Hinojosa will become Texas's first Latina governor, ending three decades of Republican control.

Hinojosa, a 52-year-old attorney and state legislator, represents a new generation of Democratic politicians seeking to broaden the party's appeal among independent voters and Americans increasingly frustrated with the Trump administration.

Her campaign sought to capitalize on growing public dissatisfaction over the US war in the Middle East, soaring gasoline prices, and the rising cost of everyday necessities.
