Death Toll in Sidoarjo School Hall Collapse Rises to Four
Sidoarjo, E. Java. The death toll from the collapse of a prayer hall at the Al-Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, climbed to four on Wednesday, after rescuers pulled another victim from the rubble three days after the disaster.
The latest body was taken to RSI Siti Hajar hospital around 2:55 p.m. local time for examination and identification, officials said.
The collapse, which struck during afternoon prayers on Monday, trapped dozens of students beneath the debris. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) reported that 102 students managed to escape or were evacuated, while an estimated 38 remain unaccounted for. Authorities stressed that the figure is still being verified, as some students may have left the scene without reporting to school officials.
Doctors earlier performed an emergency amputation on an 18-year-old student who was pinned under rubble in order to save his life before transferring him to intensive care.
Rescue teams have been working around the clock in dangerous conditions, as the building remains unstable and at risk of further collapse. “The structure is fragile, so our teams must proceed manually and with extreme caution,” a Basarnas spokesperson said.
More than 40 students were hospitalized after the incident, most of whom have since been discharged. Eight remain under medical care.
