China’s Fugitive CEO Arrested in Batam Over $138M Loan Default
Jakarta. Indonesian immigration authorities have arrested a Chinese national wanted in his home country over a massive corporate loan default.
The Immigration and Intelligence Enforcement Team at Batam Immigration Office apprehended 58-year-old WZ in Nagoya, Batam, on Thursday, Nov. 13, according to Agus Waluyo, Director of Immigration Intelligence. WZ had been listed as a fugitive by Chinese authorities following a diplomatic note from the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta.
WZ is a former CEO of a real estate company in China and is accused of defaulting on a corporate loan worth approximately 980 million yuan (around Rp 2.3 trillion, or $137.88 million). After failing to repay the debt, he reportedly fled abroad, eventually entering Indonesia on a visa-on-arrival on Oct. 7 and settling in Batam.
“WZ moved across several Asian countries since August 2025 before arriving in Indonesia,” Agus said during a press briefing at the Directorate General of Immigration in South Jakarta on Tuesday.
Chinese authorities investigated the case and classified WZ as a financial crime suspect, issuing a wanted notice. Indonesian authorities coordinated with the embassy and monitored his movements in Batam before successfully securing his arrest.
The capture highlights growing cooperation between Indonesia and foreign governments in tracking and apprehending financial fugitives. WZ’s case remains under investigation as authorities prepare for possible legal proceedings in Indonesia and discussions with Chinese counterparts regarding extradition.
