British National Dies in Immigration Detention in Depok, W. Java
Depok, West Java. A 53-year-old British national died while being held at an immigration detention facility in Depok, West Java, Indonesian authorities said.
The man, identified by his initials DJR, had been detained at the Class I Immigration Office in Depok over an alleged violation of his residence permit, according to Irvan Triansyah, head of the local immigration office.
DJR was taken into custody on Monday for further examination and placed in a detention room pending administrative processing, Irvan said in a statement released Tuesday.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon at around 3:45 p.m. local time, when officers grew suspicious after the detainee remained unresponsive inside a bathroom for an extended period.
Officers forced open the door after receiving no response and found DJR unconscious inside, Irvan said. Emergency procedures were immediately initiated, with immigration officials coordinating with police and medical personnel.
However, police later confirmed that the man had died.
Authorities said all procedures had been carried out in accordance with standard protocols, stressing that the handling of the case was conducted professionally and transparently.
The Depok immigration office expressed condolences over the incident and said it is continuing to work closely with police, representatives of the British government, and the victim’s family to ensure a thorough and communicative process.
No further details have been released, and officials have yet to provide an updated explanation regarding the cause of death.
