Karawang. A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday along the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road (Japek) in Karawang Regency. The Bhineka bus, carrying 38 passengers, overturned, resulting in six fatalities.

Lucky Martono, Chief of the Karawang Police Traffic Unit, reported on Monday that the Bhineka bus with license plate E 7706 AA, en route from Jakarta to Cirebon, suddenly overturned at kilometer 41 of the Japek Toll Road. The accident is believed to have occurred due to the driver allegedly speeding.

The crash resulted in two immediate fatalities, and four others lost their lives while being transported to Rosela Hospital in Interchange Karawang Barat and Mandaya Hospital in Karawang Regency, West Java.

Apart from the six fatalities, four individuals suffered severe injuries, while thirteen sustained minor injuries.

The Karawang Police, in collaboration with the Karawang Police forensic team, intend to fingerprint the deceased victims. The police will also conduct a urine test on the bus driver to determine whether there was any influence of drugs.

The survivors have been escorted home by the police to their families in the Cirebon area and its surroundings. However, there is uncertainty regarding whether a crime scene investigation will be conducted at the incident location, with an expected rise in traffic as travelers return from the New Year's holiday.

According to one of the surviving passengers, Iim Supriadi, the driver of the crowded bus was driving at a high speed of around 120 kilometers per hour from Jakarta to Cirebon.

"The driver was driving the vehicle very fast, and even zigzagging. When reaching the border of Karawang and Bekasi, around kilometer 41, the vehicle suddenly swerved and rolled over on the road," said Iim.

The Karawang Police and highway units promptly responded to the scene to evacuate both the survivors and the deceased victims at the incident location.
