Jakarta. Despite using a less expensive bike than his competitors, Bernard van Aert remains determined as he prepares for the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he will compete in the demanding Omnium event featuring four races.

While rivals benefit from custom-made bikes tailored to their precise specifications, Bernard relies on a mass-produced model.

"I acknowledge the difference it makes, but my priority is maximizing performance with this bike," explained the 26-year-old cyclist following training at Jakarta Velodrome.

Coach Dadang Haries Poernomo highlighted the advantage of competitors from countries like Japan, England, France, and Malaysia who possess bikes tailored specifically to each athlete.

"With these countries, we're behind in that aspect. Their bikes are costly, even reaching Rp 2 billion for Japanese models," remarked Dadang, contrasting with Bernard's bike valued at approximately Rp 500 million for the Olympics.

"We're currently focused on maximizing Bernard's performance with the best equipment available," added Dadang.

The Paris 2024 Olympics marks Indonesia's return to track cycling after a hiatus. Despite his background in road racing, Bernard finds adapting to track cycling straightforward.

"I'm accustomed to track bikes, so adjustments mainly involve today's practice. I haven't used one in a while, so it's about adapting gears and getting comfortable, not intensive training over weeks," Bernard explained.

Currently part of the Mula Cycling Team, Bernard will continue competing in various races ahead of the Olympics, starting with the National Cycling Championship in Batam and then traveling to Spain and Italy for road race and track competitions in preparation for the men's Omnium event at Paris 2024.
