Away Supporters Still Banned as Indonesia Prepares for President's Cup
Jakarta. Erick Thohir, Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), reaffirmed that away supporters will remain banned from attending the 2024 President's Cup. This decision aligns with ongoing reforms under FIFA's supervision following the Kanjuruhan tragedy in 2022.
Thohir highlighted the need for improved safety standards, as FIFA continues to monitor Indonesia's football landscape, having established an office in Jakarta.
"We are still under observation, and while last year went well, there were incidents at the end of the season," he said at a press conference on Monday.
The Kanjuruhan tragedy occurred on October 1, 2022, at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, Indonesia. Following a match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya, a crowd surge led to a stampede when police fired tear gas to disperse the fans. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 135 people and left hundreds injured, making it one of the deadliest events in football history. Following the incident, Indonesia was required to improve stadium safety standards and implement international security protocols.
"We must not let FIFA see this as merely a cosmetic transformation. We need to address the Kanjuruhan tragedy seriously," he added.
The ban on away fans will not be lifted for the President's Cup or Liga 1 2024-2025 season due to concerns over past incidents of violence and vandalism. Last season saw many away fans defying the ban, resulting in disruptions during key matches.
Thohir urged supporters to recognize the importance of these regulations for ensuring safety and preventing any further tragedies. "This is not about stifling the sport’s growth, but about creating a secure environment for all fans," he explained.
The President's Cup, an unofficial FIFA tournament, is set to begin on July 19 and will feature eight Liga 1 teams. It aims to exemplify proper tournament organization in line with FIFA standards. Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo confirmed that security measures are being implemented to ensure a safe event.
The tournament will kick off at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, utilizing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. The winning team will receive Rp 5 billion, the largest prize since the tournament's inception. Teams will compete in two groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the semifinals at Manahan Stadium in Solo.
