Anies Baswedan Regrets Missing 2024 Regional Elections
Jakarta. Anies Rasyid Baswedan has expressed regret over his inability to participate in the 2024 Regional Elections. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) initially invited him and intended to nominate him for the Jakarta gubernatorial race. However, PDI-P unexpectedly chose Pramono Anung paired with Rano Karno instead.
Anies' name surfaced at the last moment for the West Java gubernatorial candidacy, with rumors suggesting a possible pairing with PDI-P West Java Chairman Ono Surono. Anies rejected the offer and ultimately, PDI-P selected Pangandaran Regent Jeje Wiradinata and actor Ronal Surapradja for the position.
“Some may ask, ‘Anies, do you regret not participating in this election?’ Yes, I do. I regret not being able to address the aspirations of the city's poor residents who came to my home, expressing their desire to restore the conditions of the past 1.5 years,” the former Jakarta Governor said at his residence in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, on Friday.
“I apologize for not being able to assist through policy-making channels, but that does not mean the struggle is over,” he added.
Despite not running in the 2024 elections, Anies extended his congratulations to the candidates currently undergoing health checks. He believes the outcomes of the democratic process should benefit the people, not just a select few.
“Congratulations to those starting their health checks today. I hope the process goes smoothly and that democracy continues to function effectively,” Anies said.
Anies emphasized that, although he will not be participating in the 2024 local elections, he remains committed to advocating for equality, justice, and opportunities, with the goal of making Indonesia fairer and more progressive. He reaffirmed his dedication to continuing his work and efforts within Indonesia.
“I love Indonesia unconditionally. I was born and raised here, and I will continue to fight here. My commitment to Indonesia will keep me here, working and striving within this country. I will not leave Indonesia despite the challenges I face,” Anies concluded.
