All 53 Indonesians Safe After 8.8-Magnitude Quake Strikes Russia’s Kamchatka
Jakarta. All 53 Indonesians living in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula were safe and sound following an 8.8-magnitude quake on Wednesday, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The powerful quake had struck the peninsula around 8.25 a.m. local time Wednesday, sparking tsunami warnings across a number of Pacific nations. The ministry’s citizen protection director Judha Nugraha told the Jakarta Globe that the Indonesian diplomatic representatives immediately got in touch with local authorities to make sure all citizens were unaffected. There are 53 Indonesians currently residing in Kamchatka Peninsula.
“Our embassy in Moscow has contacted our citizens. So far, no citizen is affected by the earthquake,” Judha said.
The ministry is also “coordinating intensively” with the Indonesian embassies in Tokyo, Osaka, and Los Angeles. One of the strongest earthquakes in modern history has triggered evacuations in Japan and parts of the US. The 8.8-magnitude temblor has also caused a tsunami in the northern Pacific region.
“We have also reminded Indonesians to watch out for any aftershocks and tsunami,” Judha said.
