32 Indonesians Fleeing Iran War to Arrive in Jakarta Tomorrow
Jakarta. As many as 32 Indonesians fleeing from the Iran war will arrive in Jakarta on Tuesday, according to the government.
Indonesia is gradually repatriating its citizens from Iran as the US-Israel fighting with Tehran continues unabated. The repatriation is a voluntary choice, meaning that it ultimately depends on whether the citizen wishes to return home, regardless of the security situation in the Middle East. The first batch has 32 evacuees out of the 329 Indonesians residing in Iran, less than 10% of the entire community. Heni Hamidah — the acting citizen protection director at the Foreign Ministry — said Monday that the group had traveled from Tehran to the Azerbaijani capital of Baku via land route.
“The [32] evacuees are now all safe in Baku. These people are now waiting for their flights bound for Indonesia,” Heni told the Jakarta Globe via text.
“They are expected to arrive in Indonesia tomorrow [March 10]. We are still keeping an eye on their flight schedules."
A few days ago, Heni had said that the next round of evacuation would hinge on the most updated security assessments. The government will continue to keep in contact with the Indonesians who wish to stay in Iran. Heni signaled that there might be some Indonesians traveling to Tehran before the war.
The Indonesian community in Iran mainly comprises university students. They are also largely concentrated in Iran’s seventh-largest metropolis, Qom.
The conflict erupted when the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Tehran on Feb. 28. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that his country has no intention to surrender, and will “resist as long as it takes”. US President Donald Trump has previously said that he expects the fighting to be over in “four to five weeks”.
