Jakarta. A man who was being treated for morbid obesity with a weight of around 300 kilograms upon hospital admission died at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Jakarta early on Thursday.

Muhammad Fajri, 27, died from a severe infection in his leg after being treated for a week, RSCM President Director Lies Dina Liastuti was quoted by local media outlets as saying.

According to hospital records, Fajri died at 1:25 a.m. local time.

A team of 16 specialists assigned to handle the case has previously warned that Fajri's obesity had triggered complications as his weight has disrupted the body’s metabolism.

"This is something very unusual for someone to become this big. This would put huge pressure on the body's metabolism. The lungs and heart would struggle to function ... especially since he does not move around much,” Lies said during a press conference after Fajri was admitted to the hospital on June 14.

She said Fajri also suffered from skin infections from being immobile.

“There are infected wounds on his skin. It is hard for him to breathe because of the infection and all,” Lies said.

RCSM has treated other obese patients before, including Arya Permana: a boy from Karawang who weighed around 192 kilograms.

But Fajri’s conditions “are much worse because he came with breathing difficulties and more complications”, Lies said.
