Jakarta. An Indonesian man recently died after being battered by a group of fellow Indonesians in Cambodia, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The victim was a 30 year-old male known by his initials RAH. The victim --alongside the perpetrators-- worked at the same online gambling company.

Judha Nugraha, the ministry’s director for citizen protection, said that 22 Indonesians had ganged up on the victim whom they had accused of stealing money. Two of the culprits were women. RAH died from the severe injuries in Poipet --a Cambodian city close to the Thai borders-- on Sep. 23.

“They were beating RAH with a stick,” Judha told the press in Jakarta on Friday.

“We will work on repatriating the victim’s body as soon as possible, but we will also ask the company to take responsibility [for the repatriation process],” the diplomat added.

The Cambodian police have already arrested the 22 Indonesian culprits. Judha did not say whether the money that RAH had allegedly stolen belonged to the company that they were all working for.

“We still don’t know the details. Some say that it is the company’s money. But we will just wait for the police’s investigations there. … [What RAH allegedly stole] is around 22,000 bahts [$665.8],” Judah said.

As per the usual procedure, the Indonesian government will help its citizens with legal troubles abroad.

“But by legal assistance, it means helping legally troubled Indonesians get their rights, not supporting what they have made. This includes the right to have a lawyer, interpreter, and access to consular services,” Judha said.

Judha did not say the name of the victim’s employer, although the diplomat said that “Cambodia considers gambling legal”. Even so, the government still advised Indonesians against working at such companies when abroad.
