11-Year-Old Dies After Being Set on Fire by Classmate; Family Takes Legal Action
Padang. A tragic incident occurred at SDN 10 Durian Jantung elementary school in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra. Aldelia Rahman, 11, a student, was doused with fuel and set ablaze during a physical education activity at school. The victim's family recounted the harrowing events.
The victim's cousin, Madona, described the incident that took place on February 28. Aldelia was participating in a physical education activity when the homeroom teacher instructed the students to take part in a communal cleaning activity.
"After burning some trash, the students were left unsupervised by the teacher. A classmate grabbed a bottle of gasoline from another student and sprayed it on Aldelia's body. Due to strong winds, the flames caught Aldelia, setting her on fire," Madona said, as quoted from BTV on Friday.
Madona explained that Aldelia attempted to save herself, ultimately ending up in front of the classroom.
"She (Aldelia) tried to run to the bathroom, but it was locked, so she ran back to the front of the class, and everyone screamed. Eventually, Aldelia was told to roll on the ground to extinguish the flames. The physical education teacher then arrived, tried to remove her clothes, and helped to put out the fire. Aldelia was then immediately taken to the nearest health clinic," she recounted.
Due to the severity of her burns, Aldelia was referred to the local hospital RSUP M Djamil Padang, where she was treated for 35 days.
Afterward, she was allowed to return home as there were no other underlying health issues, and she was only suffering from burn injuries.
"Three days after returning from the hospital, she seemed to have a good appetite. However, on the fourth day, she lost her appetite, so we took her to the hospital for a check-up," Madona said.
"Her condition worsened, and she was hospitalized for 10 days. After showing some improvement, she was discharged but was readmitted several times until she eventually passed away," she continued.
The family has reported Aldelia's classmate, who allegedly sprayed the fuel on her, and the school for negligence to the police.
"The family has filed a report with the Padang Pariaman Police," she added.
